It’s that time of year again when we all make (and possibly break!) our New Year’s resolutions. 2024 has just started and it’s an opportunity for personal and professional renewal. The start of the year is a perfect time to reflect on how the previous year unfolded and set fresh goals for the future – and channel your energy towards shaping your professional journey.
Reflecting on the past
Before diving into the excitement of making a fresh start, take a minute to think about what happened in 2023. What did you learn? What challenges did you face? Did you have a chance to grow and tap into your potential? Reflecting on what worked the previous year (and what could be improved upon) can help you make decisions about how you want to proceed in the future.
Values and priorities
Most people say they want to work at a company that feels like a strong match with what’s most important for them. What priorities and values matter most to you in your professional life? Set SMART goals
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals can live on your phone, right on your desktop, or even on a sticky note. It’s important to make sure that you can see them regularly so that they won’t be “out of sight, out of mind.” An example of a SMART goal might be “Organize my daily email folder by logging on to work 10 minutes earlier each day” or perhaps to “Apply for the Cloud Test Architect position at Kinaxis by February 1st, 2024.”
Professional development
While you’re taking stock of what you have achieved in the last year and thinking about where you want to go, consider upskilling to enhance your skills and knowledge. Over the last few years, the number of online providers of virtual courses has increased significantly and you can learn just about anything without leaving the comfort of your own home. There are also many continuing education opportunities at your local universities, colleges, and/or training institutes.
