Why academic conferences are important for industry

To optimize a complex supply network, large manufacturing companies need a state-of-the-art advanced planning and scheduling (APS) tool. Most will investigate the current state of the software, including its features and capabilities, before making a selection but they should also assess its future landscape and vision. Acquisition of a comprehensive supply chain planning software needs careful assessment. Moreover, it is a long-term engagement that normally comes with updates and enhancement of business and decision-making processes. All of these factors highlight the importance of choosing the right vendor.

The question is, how can you make sure that a top-of-the-line product stays the best in class 5, 10, 20 years from now? Lots of factors are involved but investing in research and development (R&D) is one of the most important measures.

Why Kinaxis invests in R&D

At Kinaxis, we aggressively invest in R&D to guarantee our clients get a state-of-the-art supply chain planning tool not only now but in the future. To support our core R&D initiatives, we participate in a diverse range of thought leadership activities:

  • We follow and absorb the latest academic advancements in supply chain planning, machine learning, optimization and computer science through reading journals and attending conferences and seminars.
  • We collaborate with top researchers and universities in the field.
  • We continuously support employee participation in a wide range of professional organizations.
  • We share our experience and latest R&D advancements with the academic community to help shape and define research questions and focuses.

One of the ways we address these activities is to participate in academic and practitioners’ conferences and seminars, like the upcoming 2022 Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) conference.

POMS is one of the largest and most active international professional societies for academics and practitioners with interests in production operations, operations management and supply chain management. Since 1990, POMS has annually held its conferences focused on academic and practitioner research presentations in the field. POMS also holds joint conferences with the European operations management society (EurOMA). POMS is constantly managed by top-of-the-field professors like Marshall Fisher, Sushil Gupta, Nada Sanders, Suresh Sethi, Max Shen, Wickham Skinner, Martin Starr, Christopher Tang and Luk Van Wassenhove.

This year's conference will be virtual, held from April 21 to 25, with networking and social events, a doctoral consortium, workshops and tutorials – and Kinaxis will be there. We invite you to register and see our efforts in action.
